What to collect? As a basic principle, all packaging in Switzerland marked with the 'alu' recycling symbol should be collected. Since 1996, collecting aluminium in collection bins has been made even simpler for consumers and public authorities alike. Thanks to significant advances in the technology used for separating different types of metals, and through close co-operation between the IGORA co-operative and FERRO Recycling, aluminium packaging and food tins made of tinplate can be disposed of in the same containers. As it is more economical for them, many local authorities are now making use of this form of collection. It is collections of these types of aluminium packaging that IGORA primarily supports through its various, well-targeted operations.

Why collect? The aluminium produced from recycling is high-grade. It can be reused for making cans as well as for car and railway rolling-stock components, designer furniture and aluminium cases. This closed-loop life cycle results in energy savings, conserves raw materials and also contributes effectively to reducing the amount of waste that would otherwise be produced.
Recycling aluminium beverage cans, for instance, can produce savings of up to 95 percent of the energy needed for producing new aluminium. On top of that, in contrast to many materials that are returned for recycling, aluminium can be reused over and over again without any loss of quality.
