Everyone’s done it sometime or another: bought ten aluminium beverage cans of beer or cola and carried them home. Quite a load, weighing down your carrier bag. After all, ten cans contain 3.3 litres of liquid. Plus on top of that, there’s the weight of the ten aluminium cans themselves – another heavy cargo! But that’s where you’d be very wrong. An aluminium can only weighs 14 grams, or often even less. So ten cans only weigh a mere 140 grams! Light as a feather in comparison to the 3.3 litres.
In fact, aluminium beverage cans have not always been so light. 15 years ago they weighed at least 18 grams. Thanks to on-going development and better high-technology production techniques, their weight has been reduced by around 25 percent since then.
Lightweight aluminium beverage cans offer many other advantages as well. Aluminium provides optimum protection against corrosion, light, ultraviolet rays and micro-organisms. It also has no taste or smell of its own. Aluminium beverage cans also allow things to be kept for longer than most other types of packaging.
Plus, because aluminium conducts the cold really well, drinks can be cooled quickly. Who doesn’t fancy a drink from an ice-cold aluminium can on a hot summer’s day?
Above all, hardly any other container can be recycled as efficiently as an aluminium can!
